Tensor Analysis by Schade and Neemann, Translated by Dziubek and Rusjan

Recently, I started reading Tensor Analysis by Schade and Neeman. At first, I read this book because I needed to research tensors for a project (and partially out of my own interest). I started getting really interested in the book and kept reading it. The book obviously covers tensors, geometric objects which obey certain transformation laws and can act as maps between different spaces. I find that while the authors may take a rigorous approach, with enough reading you should be able to understand what they are talking about.
Before I start my review of this book, there is one important thing I need to say. This book has some heavy math so it would be nice to have some knowledge of slightly higher-level math before you start reading it. With that being said, this book still isn't nearly as loaded with prerequisites as other books are on this subject. But, like I said before, it makes up for it in rigor. A lot of times you will find yourself rereading a page trying to understand the proofs. But once you do understand them, they offer a very in-depth and valuable perspective on the subject.
The book also offers practice problems that are not hard enough to make you quit, but they are also challenging enough to make you refer back to previous sections in the book. These problems are few but they help show you what you need to refer back to strengthen your grasp of the subject. At first, they are many in number relative to the rest of the book, but they start to slowly disappear. They don't entirely leave, but because the topics become more complex there are far fewer computational problems.
Finally, I want to talk about the density of the book. There is lots of material packed into a short space. It took me a week to get through almost twenty pages. This can be viewed as a good or bad thing, depending on if you like a concise, dense book or a long and easy book. I don't particularly care, but you may if you are deciding whether or not to choose this book.
In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have a strong interest in this topic because it would become somewhat of a drag to read through. However, if you have a strong interest in tensors then this would probably be the perfect book for an introduction to the subject. But like I said before, be warned of dense content and high levels of rigor. Good Luck.

  1. Good job! I liked how you didn't just praise the book like most blog posts do, and did talk about some things it could do better. I also liked how you described the content in the book and how and how well it conveys and teaches these ideas of tensors. I also think it's a good thing that you decided to read something that you liked rather than something just to read something. Great job on this, but I don't think I'll be reading this anytime soon as I am not quite advanced in math to understand tensors.

  2. I like how you gave a warning about some things that would be nice to know before reading this book, as not many people do this. Although this is not your average fiction novel, you did a great job explaining what the book is about as well as how it pertains to us. I don't have that much interest in tensors, but after reading this post, I want to lean more about this. Great job!

  3. Great post! I like how you give a detailed review about the content of the book and who it is written for. I also think it is interesting how you mentioned that it includes practice problems to actually do what the book is teaching. I don't think this book is for me, but I think this could help anybody who is interested in learning more about tensors.

  4. What I found interesting about this blog is that while others chose fantasy or fiction you chose tensors. As you said it is difficult to analyze a book about analysis of tensors. Realistically all you could talk about is the density and difficulty of the content. Although it was a short blog I think you did a great job because you made the most out of something that is difficult to write about. I enjoyed the blog, but as Teo said I probably won't be reading this book anytime soon.
